Finding yourself without a working car key is stressful. Start with your immediate safety, then gather the information needed to arrange the right help.
1. Make sure you and your passengers are safe
If a person or animal is trapped and in immediate danger, contact emergency services. If the vehicle is in an unsafe roadside position, seek appropriate roadside assistance. Do not try to force entry or damage a window as a routine solution.
2. Check whether a spare is available
Contact anyone who may hold a spare and check the last places you used your keys. Distinguish between keys locked inside the car and keys that are genuinely missing: tell the locksmith which situation applies.
3. Prepare your vehicle details
Have the registration, make, model, approximate year and postcode ready. Explain whether the car is locked, where it is parked and whether access is restricted. Have identification and evidence that you are entitled to access the vehicle available; ask what documents are needed.
4. Ask what the quote includes
Explain that you have no working key. Ask about vehicle entry, the replacement key, cutting and programming where needed, travel and any out-of-hours charges. Availability depends on the vehicle and security system; an all-keys-lost job needs to be assessed individually.

5. Discuss the missing key and arrange a spare
If you suspect theft, tell the locksmith and contact the police and your insurer as appropriate. Ask whether the missing key can be removed from the vehicle’s authorised key memory, and what further steps may be needed. Removing electronic authorisation does not necessarily stop a physical key blade from operating a mechanical lock.
Once access and starting are restored, consider arranging a spare key and storing it separately.
